Imagine you’re driving down the road in Elmhurst, and all of a sudden you see smoke coming from under your vehicle’s hood. Not only is that a scary situation, but it also means that there’s something wrong with your vehicle. That’s why it’s important to keep  up with routine maintenance, so you can avoid more serious issues. Here’s what to know if your car does overheat.

4 Reasons Your Car is Overheating

  • Leaking Coolant: This is one of the most common reasons that cars overheat. That’s because once all the coolant leaks out, there’s nothing but the air from outside to keep your engine cool. Check for any leaks below you car, and place a piece of paper under where it’s leaking to see what color it is. If you don’t see a leak, dirt or debris may be causing a blockage, so the coolant can’t get to where it needs to go.
  • Broken Thermostat: The thermostat regulates the coolant and helps prevent the engine from overheating. If the thermometer isn’t working properly, you may also see irregular temperature jumps and/or leaking coolant in addition to having your car overheat.
  • Low Oil: Another common cause for overheating is a low oil level. Your vehicle’s engine needs oil for lubrication and to work properly. Without the right amount of oil, the moving parts can create friction, which creates heat.
  • Broken Cooling System: If your vehicle is overheating, it might be because of a broken part in your cooling system, such as the water pump or radiator. If this is the case, you can have these parts repaired or replaced at your local Clarendon Hills service center.
