What is Section 179?

Section 179 is a tax deduction that allows businesses to purchase larger SUVs and write them off their taxes. For that reason, Section 179 is often referred to as the “Hummer Tax Loophole.” Certain “work vehicles” and typical passenger vehicles that aren’t likely to be used for personal errands are almost always eligible for the full or limited deduction. These vehicles include classic cargo vans, taxis, forklifts, passenger vehicles, trucks, and vans that are used more than 50% in qualified business use.

Section 179 & SUVs/Crossvers

Certain SUVs and crossovers with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) higher than 6,000 pounds (but no more than 14,000 pounds) are eligible for a deduction of up to $25,000 if the vehicle is bought and “placed in service” before December 31.

Section 179 Deduction: Eligible INFINITI SUVs

INFINITI offers two SUVs that qualify for Section 179: INFINITI QX80 and INFINITI QX56. The INFINITI QX80 has a GVW of 7,300 pounds, and the INFINITI QX56 has a GVW of 7,500 pounds.

The INFINITI QX80 was formerly called the QX56 until 2013, which is when the QX56 fell out of production. The QX56, however, can still be purchased from a used car dealer. Here’s a bit more information about the INFINITI QX80 and QX56 SUVs and the features/specs that make them great choices for businesses:

• INFINITI QX80 (2004–present): The INFINITI QX80 features a powerful V8 engine with a towing capacity of up to 8,500 pounds. It has a maximum cargo capacity of up to 95.1 cubic feet and can seat up to seven.
• INFINITI QX56 (2004–2013): The INFINITI QX56 is a truck-based, body-on-frame SUV available with RWD and 4WD. It’s powered by a 400-hp V8 engine and can tow up to 8,500 pounds. It has the same cargo capacity and seating capacity as the QX80. In 2014, it was renamed the QX80.
